THE COMMUNICATIONS CONSPIRACY
THE COMMUNICATIONS CONSPIRACY is a New York City-based jazz/new music multimedia performance group that focuses on creating audiovisual events. The CC presents experimental performances that merge live structured improvisational music with prerecorded electroacoustic soundscapes--both of which are synchronized with live projections of avant-garde film and video works. To this end, the CC is dedicated to the creation of audiovisual material via a marriage of new and old technologies.
The musical aspect of the CC is essentially twofold. Mediated by an array of portable electronics, one portion of the sound performance includes a variety of synthesis techniques as well as real-time signal processing such as audio sample manipulations of spoken-word recordings. The other portion is realized through the use of traditional instruments (saxophone, bass, and drums), whereby the group performs original compositions that rely heavily on structured improvisations with indeterminate procedures.
The visual aspect of the group also consists of basically two components: film and video. The film works presented by the CC are 8 mm projections that endeavor to explore and distill the relationships between social stratification and political systems. The video works are often vast in content and range from combinations of "new" footage shot on both video and film, to "cut-ups" of vintage educational and propaganda films. The overall aesthetic of both the film and video works lies in an attempt to create a visual narrative by merging abstract ideas with concrete images.
Through musical/sound events, both electronic and acoustic, prerecorded and live, and that are synchronized to accompany live film and video projections, THE COMMUNICATIONS CONSPIRACY combines avant-garde cinema with jazz/new music performance. The result is a multimedia audiovisual experience realized through a marriage of new and vintage technologies. As coined by Hassan I Sabbah, the leader of an eleventh-century Persian sect known as the Assassins, the CC is dedicated to the proposition that, "Nothing is true, everything is permitted."

MEAN SMOKER TRIO
MEAN SMOKER is a performance collective that focuses on generating new compositions created via group improvisation. The trio is comprised of Birmingham mainstay Matthew Devine (Downright, Incestet, The Chad Fisher Group); North East Arkansas resident Rob Alley (Mingusphere, The Rob Alley Conspiracy, The Chad Fisher Group, Downright); and NYC resident Jay Frederick.
Influences of MEAN SMOKER range from John Coltrane to Tom Waits, from mid and late 60´s Miles Davis to the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen. With this improvising trio one thing is certain: you will hear compositions you have never heard before and may never hear live again.
