Jay Frederick is a musician and multimedia sound artist who focuses on creating audiovisual events. Frederick presents his work as a composer, drummer, photographer/filmmaker, and digital sound artist by creating electroacoustic soundscapes mediated by an array of portable electronics combined with avant-garde filmworks.
Frederick’s work has been presented at Harvestworks Digital Media Art Center, The TANK Art Space, Greenpoint Electronics Festival, The Venus Room, and CBGB in New York City.
As a Drummer, his playing typically melds deceptively simple grooves with a casual, loose feel that is executed with precision. Combining strong and deep timekeeping with bold and gestural abstract color, he has impressed musicians and critics alike with his highly personal approach to the drumset as a powerful yet uncommonly delicate and sensitive instrument.
Frederick worked with a wide range of consummate musicians including Edie Brickel, Tony Trischka, David Bromberg, Casey Driessen, Caitlin Cary, Bill Frisell, Benny Golson, Frank Wess, Ernie Watts, James Spaulding, John Hart, Dave Binney, Barry Harris, James Williams, David Cier, Gary Smulyani, Eric Reed, Milt Hinton, Cleve Eaton, Rodney Whittaker, and Delfayeo Marsalis, among others
Frederick has performed on television and radio including NPR´s Whad´ Ya Know and Mountain Stage, and NBC’s The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien.
